Gun advocates rally at New Mexico capitol

New Mexico pro-gun advocates rallied as part of a national demonstration to tell state and federal lawmakers to not take away gun rights.
National Gun Appreciation Day was held in response to President Barack Obama’s gun law proposals that include universal background checks and bans on assault rifles and high capacity gun clips.
Demonstrators, some armed with guns, met at the New Mexico Roundhouse in Santa Fe on Saturday and cried foul on the president’s gun proposals.
"Our rights, they're spelled out in the Constitution. They're not privileges. Gun ownership and self-defense, it's not a privilege, it's a right,” she said.
Tim Dumler said in his three decades as a gun owner he has not committed a violent crime.
"I've been carrying (a firearm) since I was six, and I'm 39 now. I've been carrying for 33 years. I've never committed a violent crime and I do not feel like I should be punished for the actions of a few crazies," Dumler said.
Larry Ross, who said he is a National Rifle Association member, did not agree with some protestors and their method of voicing the opinion.
"I wouldn't have suggested bringing a firearm here, but they did and that's their opinion and what they thought was good," Ross said.
He agrees with President Obama’s stance to expand background checks, but Ross does not want a ban on assault weapons or high capacity magazine clips.
"I'm very pro second amendment, but let's get something done,” Ross said. “Let's let the legislators make sense rather than just make noise.”
