FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - The new postmaster in Farmington is the first American Indian to hold the post in the Post Office's 134-year history in the city.

The Farmington Daily Times reports that 37-year-old Postmaster Steve Begay also is the youngest person to hold the position in Farmington.

Begay is originally Shiprock and is a member of the Navajo tribe.

He began working for the postal service in 1999 after serving in the Marine Corps.

Over the years, Begay worked at several other post offices before coming to the Farmington Post Office in 2005.

The office last year was responsible for delivering 18 million pieces of mail and 150,000 packages to 21,000 addresses in the area.
