MLK breakfast honors slain leader

The 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial commemorative breakfast was more than just a festive celebration marked by prayer, hope and praise.
It was also more than just the birthday of a civil rights hero; it marked the second inauguration of the United States’ first black president.
Organizers made sure the room was filled with kids and teenagers who are just now learning King’s legacy, including 9-year-old Noah Daniels.
“One day he had a dream that we could all be the… we could all be equal,” Daniels said. The breakfast also served as an opportunity to award scholarships to several high school students, hoping to make college an easier reality.
“It’s good to remember this just to keep his dream alive and just keep remembering what he did,” scholarship recipient David Nowlin said. People also took time to honor King’s nonviolent message in light of recent tragedies.
“We just had a family, God bless the family, our prayers are with them, that suffered at the hands of gun violence,” NM Office of African American Affairs director Yvette Bell said.
They hoped shedding spotlight on King’s memory will help youth to later address difficult issues.
