HOBBS, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a jail inmate in Hobbs has been found hanged in his cell and it appears to be a suicide.

Hobbs Detention Center Staff say they found 48-year-old Rene Van Der Pol dead in his single cell just before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

That was shortly after Van Der Pol was arraigned by a judge on charges of distribution and possession of child pornography.

Hobbs police say Van Der Pol was arrested on Jan. 18 and was being held on a $750,000 bond.

Police say his body has been sent to the Office of the Medical Investigation for an autopsy.
