Torrance Co. sheriff won't enforce federal gun-control laws

As Congressional Democrats roll out an assault weapons ban proposal, one New Mexico sheriff has publically stated he will not enforce federal gun-control laws.
In a Jan. 18 letter to county residents in response to President Barack Obama’s call for tighter gun-control laws, Torrance County Sheriff Heath White stated that he has taken an oath to uphold citizens' constitutional rights and that includes protecting their 2nd Amendment rights.
“Any federal regulations enacted by congress or by executive order of the president offending the constitutional rights of my citizens shall not be enforced by me or by my deputies,” White wrote. “Nor will I permit the enforcement of any unconstitutional regulations or orders by federal officers within the borders of Torrance County, New Mexico.”
The Colorado sheriff, whose county includes the movie theater where 12 people were shot and killed last year, issued a statement Tuesday criticizing police and sheriff’s officials who have said they would not enforce gun-control laws they consider unconstitutional.
Most of the state's sheriffs stated in a public appearance at the Roundhouse last week that they are under oath to uphold the constitution.
