Eric Griego spoke out for the first time on national television since five members of his family were murdered in their home last weekend.

The interview aired on the HLN show 'Dr. Drew On Call' Wednesday evening. Griego accused national and local media as well as the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office of making his nephew Nehemiah Griego, who is accused of the murders, out to be a monster.

"The real issue is why did this happen to a seemingly normal, relatively well adjusted boy?” Griego said. “Thousands of people missed the cues. How did that happen? They are dead.  It's tragic.  We're devastated and yet the fascination of the local and sadly national media is how much of a monster was this kid."

One of the surprises of the interview is that Griego placed some blame on Nehemiah’s 12-year-old girlfriend even though the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office cleared her of any crimes.

"The young girl testified to police and they decided they aren't going to charge her,” Griego said. “The evidence we saw on their phones was that she in fact was egging him on.  She met him at the church afterwards. If she was really so concerned about what he talked about doing and everything he had just done, she should would have been aware through those texts.”

The program hosts were quick to contest where Griego placed blame.

“She had several hours where she could have talked to her mom or called the cops or done something.  She did nothing,” Griego said. “The point is (people) have rushed to judgment on this kid and the rush to say ‘oh, it had to be all him, he had to be some sort of psycho to do this.’ There are many, many factors."

KOB Eyewitness News 4 spoke with Griego on the phone Thursday afternoon. Griego said he was troubled with local news reports about his family and hadn’t decided when he would speak to the New Mexico press.
