Sen. John Kerry testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Thursday on his nomination for Secretary of State.

Kerry addressed the growing global uncertainty specifically in places like northern Africa, Syria and Iran.

His hearing comes one day after the committee sparred with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Kerry would take over for Clinton and be responsible for addressing ongoing conflicts in Libya and around the world.

The Vietnam veteran and experienced senator has broad support, but the meeting quickly turned serious.

Republicans pressed Kerry about the terrorist attack in Benghazi.

The questions mirrored those Secretary of State Hillary Clinton answered Wednesday.

Kerry would inherit the department in the midst of growing global uncertainty.

On Iran's controversial nuclear program, Kerry demanded Iran submit to rigorous inspections.

"Our policy is not containment. It is prevention and the clock is ticking," he said.

Kerry's hearing is the first of three for President Obama's nominees to national security positions.
