UNM scraps plan to cut rec center hours

A plan to cut hours at the University of New Mexico’s recreation center has been scrapped.
The university was planning to close the Johnson Center an hour earlier starting next month.
University officials said it was because they couldn't afford the minimum wage increase for students who work there.
Students KOB Eyewitness News 4 spoke with said they like the later hours when the gym isn't as busy.
“Treadmills are pretty much full from 2 until closing so you either have to get in extra early or just wait and hopefully you can get a lucky spot,” student Matthew Simmons said.
“This is the only gym I can use because I can't afford Sports and Wellness for $60 a month,” student Michelle Sandoval said.
The University decided Friday not to change the hours, but an UNM spokesperson said the University is still $30,000 short for the fiscal year because of the wage increase. Officials said they plan to ask for more money for the center from the student services budget.
