ZUNI PUEBLO, N.M. (AP) - The Zuni Housing Authority will build 12 new homes thanks to a new federal grant.

The Gallup Independent reports that ZHA director Mike Chavez said Friday that the pueblo has been approved for a $279,000 grant "to administer and supervise the construction of 12 homes for low-income families."

The grant comes from the USDA Rural Development Finances Self Help Housing Project.

Zuni tribal members who are approved for a home loan through USDA Rural Development's direct home loan program obtain a low interest mortgage, but will also be required to contribute with the labor to build their own homes.

Chavez said the savings from the reduction in labor costs allows otherwise ineligible families to own their homes.
