Public to get chance to comment Monday on new gun control proposal

The public will get the chance to comment on a new gun control bill Monday at the Capitol as legislators take comment on a bill requiring background checks for people purchasing firearms privately or at gun shows.

House Bill 77, sponsored by Democrat Miguel Garcia of Albuquerque, would require the Department of Public Safety to staff up a hotline to conduct the checks 7 days a week from 8 a. m. to 10 p.m. in order to make sure they're accessible during gun selling hours.

If you'd like to make your opinion heard, you can attend a public meeting at 1:30 p.m. Monday  in room 308 at the Capitol.

Representatives from the National Rifle Association plan to attend the hearing. You can read the entire text of the bill at the link below.
