NM man pleads guilty in a drug trafficking case

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An Albuquerque man is facing at least a 10-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to federal drug trafficking and money laundering charges.
Prosecutors say 30-year-old Homero Varela entered his plea Tuesday. They say the plea agreement requires a sentence of between 120 to 135 months in prison.
Varela was arrested in January 2012 on a 29-count federal indictment charging him and 14 co-defendants with drug trafficking, money laundering and currency structuring offenses.
He and the others were accused with conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana in New Mexico between May 2011 and January 2012. Varela and two co-defendants also were accused of participating in a money laundering conspiracy.
Thirteen of the co-defendants await trial. Varela remains in federal custody pending his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.
