Gun bill stalls in legislature

A controversial gun rights bill that could have created a legal standoff between New Mexico and the federal government appears to be dead in the state legislature.
The House Consumer Affairs Committee has voted to table the bill, making it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for supporters to sidestep the committee and revive it for a full vote on the floor of the House of Representatives.
The legislation would have made it illegal for anyone, including federal officers, to try to enforce federal gun laws in the state of New Mexico. The bill was a response to President Obama's call for outlawing assault-style weapons with big ammo clips. Similar bills have been introduced in other legislatures around the country.
"It doesn't mean the fight is over," said bill sponsor Nora Espinoza, a Republican representative from Roswell. "We just have to keep moving on and defending our second amendment rights and if anything happens in the legislature where a bill is passed that crosses that line, then we'll deal with that."
