Mark Hummels, a former politics reporter for the Santa Fe New Mexican, was among those injured Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at a Phoenix office building.

Authorities said three people were wounded in the shooting, one of them critically. The remaining two victims' injuries were less severe, Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

Police do not believe the shooting was a random act, Thompson said. Authorities said police believe there was only one shooter.

A SWAT team surrounded a house 7 miles from the shooting scene that police said is connected to the shooting. Officers were talking to someone who was not the suspect, Sgt. Steve Martos said.

According to the Phoenix Business Journal, Hummels is a partner at the law office of Osborn Maledon PA. Hummels was representing a client in a mediation proceeding Wednesday when the shooting took place.

Hummels was a politics reporter for the New Mexican in the late 1990s and early 2000s before turning to law.

Information from The Associated Press and the Santa Fe New Mexican was used in this story.
