Arizona man sentenced in NM to selling bird tail

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An Arizona man has been sentenced in federal court in New Mexico after pleading guilty to selling the tail of a protected bird.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for New Mexico says 47-year-old Daniel Chee Walley was sentenced Thursday to two months of home arrest and then a year of probation. He also must pay a $150 fine that will to go a wetlands conservation fund.
Walley pleaded guilty to violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act by selling the tail of a Swainson's hawk in 2009 to an undercover agent in New Mexico's McKinley County.
The government says Swainson's hawks and other migratory birds are protected under federal wildlife laws to help ensure that bird populations remain healthy and sustainable.
