Ashley Browder, the woman hit and killed by an Albuquerque Police Department officer Sunday morning, was a member of the National Guard out of Reno, Nev., a Kirtland Air Force Base spokesperson said.
While picturesque, the intersection of Paseo del Norte and Eagle Ranch Road has become all too familiar site for one thing.
Neighbors said the intersection where the crash happened is a troubled one.
“I see quite a few accidents on this intersection it's a normal thing," said Ernest Viramontes who works at the car wash nearby.
Viramontes said he saw what was left of two SUVs, one of them an APD vehicle, involved in a fatal crash early Sunday morning.
"The white one that I could see on the front end looked pretty smashed so it was pretty bad," he said.
Ashley Browder was the passenger in the white SUV. The 21-year-old died at the scene.
The driver, 19-year-old Lindsey Browder was taken to UNM Hospital with a fractured spine and broken hip.
The on-duty, APD sergeant, who hasn't’t being named, was also sent to the hospital as a precaution. The sergeant was trying to find a drunk driver, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said.
The sergeant turned from Paseo del Norte onto Eagle Ranch and slammed into the vehicle the women were in, said BCSO.
While more information is needed as to what lead to the crash, those familiar with the intersection say it can be dangerous.
"He just went on the green light and a lady T-boned him," Rozanne Hurst of Albuquerque said about an accident her husband was in a while ago at that same intersection.
Her husband survived the crash, but she says something needs to be done to avoid more tragedies.
"Especially with the merging the people who are coming off of Coors onto Paseo going west should have a yellow blinking light instead of that yield sign because they completely ignore it," she said.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the crash investigation.
