UNM puts cost on Albuquerque minimum wage

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The University of New Mexico is putting a half-million-dollar estimate on how much it'll cost annually to increase student workers' pay under the city of Albuquerque's new minimum wage.
Voters voted last November to raise Albuquerque's minimum wage to $8.50 an hour from $7.50. According to the Albuquerque Journal, the university calculates the cost at about $585,000.
However, the calculations say the cost could go up or down by $200,000 depending on how many hours the students actually work.
Associate Vice President Andrew Cullen says the university doesn't expect to have to eliminate student jobs to pay for the increase.
Cullen says each department will have to decide how to take on the added costs, but he says some may get extra funding if they're particularly hit hard.
