A compromise gun control bill is on its way to a floor vote in the state House of Representatives, with support from Gov. Susana Martinez.

The bill would expand background checks for gun buyers to include gun show sales along with licensed gun dealer sales. Convicted criminals and people who have been judged mentally ill would be ineligible to buy firearms. Background checks would not be required for private citizen-to-citizen gun sales.

"Yes, I think I could support it if it stays the way it is," Gov. Martinez said Monday. "Number one, it is keeping guns out of the hands of people who don't have any business having guns."

Gun rights demonstrators, many of them armed, protested outside the State Capitol Friday. They are pretty much against any gun control legislation.

If the new version of the gun control bill passes in the House, it will go over to the state Senate. It would have to pass there to make it to the Governor's desk for signing.
