$2.6 million sought to replace nonworking tissue digester

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico legislators are proposing a $2.6 million solution to a problem involving disposal of diseased animal carcasses.
The Agriculture Department has a tissue digester, an $800,000 machine that's like a huge pressure cooker that's supposed to break down and sterilize animal carcasses.
But it doesn't work, so bills proposed in the House and Senate would pay for removing the nonworking machine and replacing it with a different one.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that the digester that doesn't work was installed in 2011 after being purchased from a company that subsequently entered bankruptcy proceedings.
Because the digester doesn't work, the state has continued to dispose of animal carcasses at crematoriums in Albuquerque.
Carcasses of larger animals are sent to a Game and Fish Department incinerator in Santa Fe.
