Senate OKs tough sanctions for hunting violations

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The Senate has approved a proposal to crack down on poaching of trophy elk and other big game by lengthening the time New Mexico can bar someone from hunting in the state.
The legislation cleared the Senate on a 28-10 vote on Monday and goes to the House.
The proposal will allow the state Game Commission to suspend or revoke someone's hunting or fishing privileges for longer than three years, which is the current limit for violations.
Democratic Sen. George Munoz of Gallup said Monday the measure is directed at "thrill killers" who shoot big game such as elk just for the heads and antlers, leaving the meat to rot.
Supporters said it's possible a hunter could be banned for life in New Mexico for the worst game violations.
