Rising gas prices may be causing crimes

Gas prices continue to skyrocket in Albuquerque and it’s hitting residents hard.
Gas prices have increased every week for the past month and they're up 27 cents statewide since the beginning of the year.
But for Justin Aguilar, he's paying a much higher price after someone tried to steal gas from his truck. "I looked down and there was a small hole in my gas tank where it looked like someone had punctured it," said Aguilar.
When Aguilar left his home Monday, a huge puddle of gas surrounded his truck.
What the camera can't capture on film is the overwhelming smell of gasoline, making this a very dangerous situation.
"You know one match and it could've been a very dangerous situation and as close as it was to our apartment complex," said Aguilar.
It's unclear if someone tried to steal the gas because they didn't want to pay the high price, but Aguilar said that's no excuse for someone to do this.
"It's tough for everybody, but that doesn't make it fair for anybody to come after anybody really no matter how well off you think someone is."
People in Albuquerque are paying the least in the area for gas. The average is $3.28 a gallon. The statewide average is $3.35 a gallon, but that's still a lot less than the national average of $3.69 a gallon.
