The Bernalillo County Sheriff has released preliminary findings from a fatal crash that shows there is no proof either way that a police officer was pursuing a drunk driver when he crashed into and killed a young woman.

Ashley Browder, 21, was killed Feb. 10 when the car in which she was riding was hit by Sergeant Adam Casaus.

According to the preliminary report:

“Statements made by Sergeant Casaus reflect that at the time of the crash, he was attempting to catch up to a possible drunk driver. There is no corroborating information to either confirm or deny that statement.”

The report is based on information compiled from APD by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department and given to the District Attorney’s office.

Also from the report:

"Sergeant Casaus also stated that he entered the intersection against a red light. That statement, based on information obtained through the investigation is accurate. As he entered the intersection, Sergeant Casaus did have his emergency lights on but did not have his siren turned on.

Warrants were obtained for the “CDR- Crash Data Recorder” of both vehicles.

The “CDR” data is currently being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. There was no indication of impairment for either driver. Based on that observation, no chemical testing was performed on either driver.

The investigation is ongoing and is scheduled to be completed within 3-4 weeks. Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the District Attorney for review and the pursuit of any possible charges."
