Santa Fe's first female fire chief has announced she's retiring after more than 20 years of service.

Barbara Salas said her last day on the job will be May 31.

Salas was just 16 years old when she started working full-time for the city.

She was appointed chief in the summer of 2009.

The department's assistant chief, Erik Litzenberg, will take over after Salas’ departure.

He has been with the department since 1997.
