Gun buy-back events may draw background check evaders

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department is planning another gun buy-back event this Saturday, but a local gun store owner argues the events could be making it easier for the guns to end up in the wrong hands.
At the last gun buy-back event in early February, private buyers were offering cash to people waiting in line to turn in their guns for gift cards - a completely legal transaction. But co-owner of Albuquerque Guns Arnie Gallegos says some of the buyers showing up to the event are trying to avoid a background check.
"I know of one or two people that cannot go into a gun store and buy a firearm. They get denied for whatever reason that the FBI chooses to deny them the ability to purchase it from a gun store," Gallegos said.
Gallegos said he knows those people bought guns at the last buy-back event.
Bernalillo County's next event is this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Area Command Center, 2039 Isleta Blvd SW in Albuquerque.
The sheriff's department is offering gift cards worth up to $200 for unwanted guns.
