A Miner issue

Following their game against NMSU on Saturday, UTEP men's basketball coach Tim Floyd was asked if he would like to renew the UNM-UTEP rivalry. Floyd, expressing frustration about not being able to play the Lobos, said "it's really ridiculous."
"It makes no sense for one person to dictate that a series isn't played home and home every year. Who is that person to dictate what's gone on for 90 years. You tell me why that makes sense," said Floyd.
The Lobos have played the Miners 141 times since 1929. They last squared off against each other in March of 2011 in the NIT. Prior to the game, The UNM coaching staff got into a verbal altercation with the UTEP coaching staff at the Pit. Following the game, which UNM won 69-57, UNM head coach Steve Alford made it clear the UTEP series is not something he's in favor of.
When asked about Floyd's comments this weekend, Alford repeated his refusal to schedule UTEP. "We're working very hard behind the scenes on our non-conference schedule," explained Alford. "Our non-conference schedule is fourth in the country and UTEP's not on it. We've done a prety good job with our non-conference schedule. That's probably all I've got to say about that."
