Well-known attorney Russ Whitener dead at 65

The Whitener Law Firm of Albuquerque says founder and attorney Russ Whitener has died of cancer at age 65.
Whitener was known for his television ads and billboards in which he dramatically ripped up insurance company checks as he urged people who have been hurt in car accidents to call him.
A spokesperson for the firm said the “staff is in a daze.”
Whitener practiced in Albuquerque for 15 years.
The law firm that bears his name will carry on with five attorneys, the spokesperson said.
