(AP) WASHINGTON - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says a victory by a candidate he supported in a House primary in Illinois is a sign of things to come for gun-control legislation.

Bloomberg’s PAC, Independence USA, poured more than $2 million into ads supporting Illinois state Rep. Robin Kelly, who won a special primary on Tuesday. Those funds have been credited with helping Kelly defeat former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson, who opposes an assault weapons ban

Bloomberg says Kelly’s win reflected the public speaking out against those who stand in the way of tougher gun restrictions.

Bloomberg spoke after meeting with Vice President Joe Biden and senators from both parties to discuss efforts to curb gun violence.
