Santa Fe dumps law on requiring unions for hiring

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Santa Fe is repealing its law that requires contractors for the city's major capital-improvement projects to use union halls for hiring most workers.
The City Council's vote Wednesday to repeal the Community Worker Agreement ordinance was 5-3. Three council members who voted for it last year deciding Wednesday night to repeal it.
Two new members also voted to repeal it. Construction industry groups and individual businesses urged the city to repeal the law, which they said discourages competitive bidding.
Supporters of the law included a Democratic Party official, a union leader and a representative of the Interfaith Worker Justice.
They talked about fair wages. According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, requirements of the law included requiring workers to join the union at least for the job involved and for the unions to try to use local workers.
