MORE DAMAGES: A New Jersey jury orders Johnson & Johnson to pay a former nurse $7.8 million in punitive damages, on top of $3.35 million in compensatory damages awarded Monday. She claims its Prolift vaginal mesh implant caused years of terrible pain despite 18 unsuccessful repair surgeries. J&J RESPONSE: J&J will appeal. It says the evidence doesn’t support the verdict, as jurors found the company didn’t misrepresent Prolift, yet found it didn’t warn surgeons sufficiently about risks. THE LITIGATION: J&J and other makers of implants, which lift drooping pelvic organs, together face tens of thousands of lawsuits from patients.
