A hearing for state education nominee Hanna Skandera has concluded and will continue Saturday.

The Senate Rules Committee opened a confirmation hearing Friday on Skandera, who's been running the Public Education Department since Gov. Martinez took office in 2011.

Skandera's nomination must be heard by the committee, whose 10 members will  vote whether to recommend her. Then it will go to the full Senate, which has the power to confirm or reject her.

Democrats have opposed many education proposals advocated by Skandera and the governor, including A-F grades for schools and mandatory retention for 3rd grader who can't read.

Skandera also is expected to face questions from legislators and from the public about her ties to a nonprofit group founded by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to advocate for the same education policies she is pushing in New Mexico.

Friday's hearing concluded just before 11 a.m. and will continue Saturday at 9 a.m.
