People started streaming into the new Target at Uptown ABQ Wednesday morning as it opened to the public at 8 a.m.

The store is opening comes as much of the area is being built up as a sort of town center with apartments, shopping and restaurants.

Just ten years ago, many businesses in the area were struggling. Now, people pour through Uptown ABQ mall and the Winrock Center is being totally redeveloped.

“I’ve seen Winrock go from a thriving shopping mall where people used to go in the morning to go walking and go shopping and a very active theater all the way to tearing down the old Winrock Inn and rebuilding the infrastructure over there,” long-time neighbor Paul Losinski said.

Winrock’s master plan shows an Imax movie theater and a Dave & Buster’s in the works.

They recently opened two restaurants, including a BJ’s Brewery that sparked more than 200 jobs.

Winrock did get $137 million worth of tax increment financing from the city, state and county.
