Jail officer cleared of beating inmate in 2011

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A federal jury has cleared a former corrections officer of the most serious charge stemming from an inmate beating at the Albuquerque jail.
Authorities say 24-year-old Kevin James Casaus was accused of beating inmate Christopher Shields in the shower area of the Metropolitan Detention Center on Dec. 21, 2011.
During the booking process, Shield had gotten into a loud disagreement with another officer over whether he had to be photographed.
The Albuquerque Journal says jurors did convict Casaus of the lesser charges Wednesday.
Those were charges of lying to Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office detectives investigating the incident and of making false statements in his incident report about what happened during the assault of Shields.
Another ex-corrections officer charged in the same case is serving a 33-month prison sentence.
