SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A Senate panel recessed before it took a vote of whether Public Education Secretary Hanna Skandera should be confirmed to the cabinet-level position she's held the past two years.

The Senate Rules Committee is meeting Saturday allowed members to question Skandera.

However, a vote was not taken before the meeting ended and it is unclear when the meeting and the confirmation vote will take place.

A week ago, the committee listened to public testimony from those supporting and opposing Skandera's appointment by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.

It's possible that Skandera could continue to languish without a Senate vote, and that would allow her to remain on the job.

If the Senate rejects Skandera, she would be ousted from her post running the Public Education Department.

Senators last rejected a cabinet secretary in 1997, when Republican Gov. Gary Johnson was in office.
