With warmer weather on the way, people are enjoying the great outdoors, but pollution in two Four Corners rivers has some groups concerned.

Water conservation groups have found high levels of contaminants like E. coli in the San Juan and Animas Rivers.

"If you think about that's not something you want in the water," said Julia Campus from the San Juan watershed group.

They want to fix that.

The San Juan watershed group and the animas watershed partnership are working on a study to find out where the E. coli is coming from.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 went down to the Animas River Monday and the people we talked to either didn't seem too concerned or never thought of E. coli at all.

"I think nature takes care of itself on a lot of stuff like that," said Farmington resident, Christopher King.

And the things that concerned them were more manmade problems.

"There's power plants in the area, all kinds of things,” said John Culpepper.

“I think a lot of people don't respect our natural resources enough and they throw a lot of litter of trash and garbage and they dump stuff in the river and they shouldn't do that," said King.

But even though E. coli levels are high, it's not something to fear.

"If you stick your finger in the water it isn't going to fall off," said Campus.

The study should be done by next year and once they target the sources of e-coli then the groups will take action to fix them.
