GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (AP) - A disbarred lawyer who earlier was convicted of stalking women in Florida and New Mexico has been sentenced to 12 years in the Nevada state prison for aggravated stalking in Douglas County.

District Judge Michael Gibbons told 61-year-old Michael Meisler he'll have to serve at least four years before he'll be eligible for parole.

The Record-Courier of Gardnerville reports the judge also granted a protective order through 2023 for the 60-year-old Douglas County woman Gibbons targeted.

She testified during Wednesday's hearing Meisler put her friends, family and herself through "anguish and terror" after she broke up with him in 2011.

Meisler's attorney, Kris Brown, said he suffers from mental illness and it's unfortunate the justice system doesn't have a way to deal with that other than sending him to prison.
