A dog that was starved and left out on a balcony on Albuquerque Westside began a new life with a new owner Thursday.

In February, KOB Eyewitness News 4 first reported on Jem, an Australian Cattle Dog, who was confiscated by the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department. The dog was starving, severely underweight, and neglected on an apartment balcony, according to reports.

The dog’s owners were criminally charged while Jem was put in foster care to recover. In a month, the dog has put on a healthy amount of weight and has been given some obedience training.

Chrissie Griego adopted Jem Thursday promising her a good home.

"She is a sweet dog and I really feel a connection with her," Griego said.

After KOB 4’s original story aired, a manager at PetsMart who saw the story donated a pet bed, treats, food, and toys to Jem’s new owner.
