Students raise money to keep fresh food in schools

One way to get kids to eat their vegetables: Show them where they come from.
Students from Dolores Middle School are getting just that as they learn healthy eating habits, to last a lifetime.
"If you get a student in kindergarten to start working in the garden and eating their greens, by the time they're in high school they're gonna be mentoring those kids in first, second, third grade," said Sarah Syverson, program director for Montezuma School to Farm Project.
Since 2009, the farm to school program has taught kids about where their food comes from and how it gets from the farm to the table.
It's things like thyme, oregano, lettuce and different herbs and vegetables that students are growing themselves and they're actually eating them too.
But it takes money to bring programs like this to the schools.
This past year, the program lost some funding, and in order to make up for that, they had to get creative.
This weekend, the program is hosting a spring hoedown to raise money so it can continue introducing healthy food to kids.
"Getting them to try vegetables that they've never tried before and they're excited to try them," said Megan Tallmadge, garden coordinator.
And it's this excitement that the program hopes to continue.
