APD says they’ve seen a large number of homeless people setting up makeshift homes throughout the bosque. Those homes are often stacked high with furniture, blankets, clothes, food and random belongings that increase fire danger, especially a problem as fire season approaches.

This morning APD officers, city workers and Bernalillo County low-risk inmates searched the bosque looking for camps, clearing out and cleaning up the area and making the homeless people leave. One woman we talked to said she is glad they’re cleaning up the area but hopes they’re helping the homeless people as well.

“They’re good people mostly, they’re benign,” Regina Corritore said. “Some of them aren’t benign. With the feces and stuff it can get pretty bad but there’s gotta’ be something to do with these people cause they have a right to live like everyone else.”

APD says they did bring their “COAST” Unit along. They regularly work with homeless people in Albuquerque, and will help connect the people they found today with resources. Police say the effort doesn’t end today; APD Open Space Unit officers regularly patrol the area and are willing to even make arrests if  need be.
