Family takes issue with DA's handling of case

Family members of a murdered teacher are upset with the Bernalillo County’s District Attorney’s Office, accusing them of being lazy with the case.
In 2009, Ellen Roth went missing. The Albuquerque Police Department later determined Roth’s daughter-in-law Kathleen Roth and two others ambushed Roth in her garage, then choked her to death with a rope. They then buried her body in the Jemez Mountains.
Kathleen Roth was accused of murder and has been offered a plea deal with a max of 28.5 years in prison. Ellen’s family told KOB Eyewitness News 4 they take issue with the terms of the agreement. They also feel the DA’s office is incompetent with the case.
“The lead prosecutor kept referring to my ‘Aunt Ellen Roth’ as ‘Helen.’ She kept misnaming the defendants. In my opinion she doesn't even know what's happening in the case," said Jessica Feder.
District Attorney Kari Brandenburg defended the attorneys in her office. She says many family members of victims want the most harsh punishment for the accused, but laws don’t always allow for that.
