Crews started demolishing the field house at Farmington High School's Hutchinson field Thursday to make room for the new one.

Plans for a new field house have been in the works for about four years. Plans that Athletic Director Don Lorett says are much needed.

"We determined that new a structure was almost equivalent to the cost of remodeling just because the building was so outdated bringing everything up to code was going to be too cost intrusive to get really any changes done inside," said Lorett.

The new field house will cost a little more than $2 million. The funding came from a general grant fund.

The biggest challenge is to get the new field house finished by August so that the football teams are able to use it at the beginning of their season.

But Lorett says plans have already been made just in case the field house isn't finished by then.

"We've already moved out the football team obviously for the demo and provided a fitness area for them and locker room space so they're already in their spot," he said.

And once the field house is complete, they'll have a permanent spot.
