Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz announced he plans to retire this summer or fall.  But some Albuquerque mayoral candidates say that is way too long to wait.

Pete Dinelli, running for mayor of, says Chief Schultz should step down immediately.  He is concerned the Chief is trying to manipulate information given to the Department of Justice during their investigation into APD.

"It's almost like he's reaching out from the grave to hold on to control of the department knowing full well he's leaving," Dinelli said.  "I think a clean cut is needed."

Mayoral candidate Paul Heh also says the Chief should step down sooner than later.

"He allowed this police department to go from a top rated police department in the United States to being investigated by the Justice Department," Heh said.

Chief Schultz and Mayor Richard Berry are expected to speak to the media on Monday.
