FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - Officials with the San Juan County Housing Authority say they are being forced to stop putting people on a waiting list for housing assistance.

The reason is the automatic federal budget cuts that kicked in earlier this month.

The executive director of the housing authority, Faye Anderson, says the authority wants to prevent any false hope for the families that apply for assistance in the near future.

She says she hopes the funding will be restored, as there as many families in the northwestern New Mexico county that need help.

Anderson tells The Daily Times there are currently 244 individuals and families that are supported with financial assistance to pay rental payments through the authority.

She says nearly 450 applicants are on the waiting list.
