Police Chief Schultz to retire this summer, before mayoral election

Outgoing police chief Ray Schultz has told KOB Eyewitness News 4 he plans to retire this summer, before the Albuquerque mayoral election in the fall.
In a joint interview at City Hall on Monday with Schultz, Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry told KOB he may name an acting police chief after that, but will not move to name a permanent one before the election.
On Friday, Schultz announced he would step down after serving as chief for eight years. His term was rocked by 18 fatal officer-involved shootings since 2010.
The U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating his department for possible civil rights violations and excessive use of force.
On the day he announced his retirement, an Albuquerque jury awarded more than $10 million to the family of an Iraq war veteran killed by an APD officer during a standoff at a Northeast Heights convenience store.
The city would not comment Monday on reports that the city was asked to settle with the family of veteran Kenneth Ellis for much less money than the jury awarded.
