ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The mayor of New Mexico's largest city says he's unsure how the nomination of a U.S. Justice Department official as U.S. Labor Secretary will affect a pending federal probe into Albuquerque police.
Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry says he didn't know if the nomination of Thomas Perez will change how federal officials will examine the department.
The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Albuquerque police over cases of alleged excessive force. Perez currently is the nation's chief civil rights enforcer for the Justice Department. President Barack Obama announced Monday that he was nominating Perez to lead the Labor Department.
Outgoing Police Chief Ray Schultz says the department has been in contact with a Justice Department team and he believes team is working well with city officials.
