One city councilor told KOB Eyewitness News 4  it shouldn’t just be up to the mayor to pick Albuquerque’s next police chief.

Councilmember Isaac Benton said city councilors should be playing a bigger role.

Benton has been a vocal critic of Chief Schultz. Earlier this month, Benton came out saying the city needs a new chief.

Benton said he would like to see city councilors have a role in choosing the next police chief, but that likely won’t happen. It’s up to the mayor to decide.

“I certainly think we have a role in speaking out. We would hope to be heard,” said Benton.

Benton told KOB people want more of a police presence in the neighborhoods.

Benton also said he would like someone from outside the department to be the next chief.
