Nearly 160 jobs are soon ready to be filled was among the news Mayor Richard Berry announced Friday when he rolled out the budget for Fiscal Year 2014.
The budget includes no tax increases, pay cuts or layoffs.
Instead, all city employees are getting a one percent raise. Financially, the city is in one of the best spots they have been in in years, Berry said, because of all the belt tightening he has done in the past few years.
And now, the city is in a position to hire as well.
On Good Friday, the downtown public library was packed. The computer station was filled with job-seekers just like Natalie Wilson.
"I'm very good with people," Wilson said. "I'm customer service oriented."
But it's not just skills or a matter of a position being open, but also a department that is actually ready to hire.
Citywide there are about 160 different job opening ready to fill, Berry said.
"We have these positions that have been vacant or they've been vacant for days, a week sometimes, months, and we feel like we're now in a position to start releasing those positions," Berry said.
The positions include everything from drivers for the new curbside recycling program to maintenance workers and teacher assistants.
"It hasn't been a freeze on hiring but it's been a bit of a chill," Barbara Baca, Director of the city Parks and Recreation Department, said.
The department has had several vacancies for years and employees have been stretched thin, Baca said.
"We've increased our parks and medians and trails through the years and not increased our staff commencerate to that growth," she said.
For Wilson, this may be the opportunity she has been looking for, for years.
"Lets hire these people that need to go to work," Wilson said. "Lets hire people from Albuquerque - lets fill these positions. It's great they have the money to do it now."
Not all of the position require college degrees. The positions will be posted on the city website starting next week.
