Hundreds of care packages put together in Albuquerque are being shipped to U.S. troops stationed across the world.
There was hardly room inside the building in Northwest Albuquerque.
About 80 volunteers waited their turn to pack a gift for those who've packed up and left everything behind: our men and women in the military.
Countless goodies, necessities and items filled 250 boxes. The goal is to let our troops know they haven't been forgotten.
Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups traded in their Saturday for the mission.
"I have friends who've lost their parents and whose parents are injured and disabled. It's sad but I'm happy to do this," said boy scout Jacob Loree.
For one mother, it's a labor of love. "There's not a moment of the day that I don't think about them," said Jan Miller of her sons in the military.
Miller's two sons have been deployed, one to Afghanistan, the other to southwest Asia.
"It was so hot out there," she said. "Even working at night and I sent him a misting fan oh he just loved it. you know it was the little things the simple things you take for granted everyday that they appreciate when they're out there."
The event was put on by the Rio Grande Chapter Two of the Blue Star Mothers of America.
"We get so many wonderful thank you letters: they say this made my day," said organizer Hiltrud Ridenour. "I had a hard day today maybe a very dangerous mission that they were on they come home at night and have a box on their bunk that's what this is all about."
Blue Star Mothers holds packing events five times a year, including one for Christmas where troops get two boxes each.
The care packages go to troops stationed all over the world and in the United States.
It takes about 10 days for the recipient to be surprised with the gift.
The group says it costs between $30,000 and $35,000 a year to ship the boxes.
Volunteers and donations are always welcome. The next packing event will be June 22. Those packages will arrive for 4th of July.
