Federal agents raided the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office in Espanola on Wednesday.
It’s unclear what FBI agents took from the northern New Mexico law enforcement office, and the nature of their investigation.
But the raid coincides with a 4 On Your Side investigation in which our questions have left Rio Arriba Sheriff Tommy Rodella and his staff stonewalling.
In the course of our investigation we uncovered documents that show people in the county cited for various traffic violations have made donations to the mysterious Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Scholarship Fund.
In exchange, these people may have been told to plead not guilty in court at which point the charges against them would be dropped.
It turns out the fund is not associated with the county, the state or any other legitimate court system.
4OYS requested the scholarship fund’s financial ledgers.
“They are not public record,” Rio Arriba sheriff’s spokesperson Jake Arnold said.
4OYS has attempted to track down the sheriff, but Rodella dodged our repeated attempts at an interview.
On Wednesday Rodella was reportedly under doctor’s orders to stay home Arnold told 4OYS.
However, he was spotted ducking inside the back door at the sheriff’s office while federal investigators confiscated documents.
Rodella said he would meet with 4OYS at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
However, sources say the promised interview was a ruse to make 4OYS leave the county and the Sheriff had anticipated canceling the interview from the onset.
4OYS will be at Rodella’s office, will the sheriff?
