Espanola crash leaves sheriff's deputy in 'serious' condition

A Rio Arriba County sheriff's deputy was hospitalized after an accident in Espanola on Saturday night.

New Mexico State police said the deputy was in pursuit of a vehicle when an SUV crashed into the back end of the sheriff squad car.

The officer, who hasn't been identified, was sent to the hospital with serious injuries.

The accident happened on NM 68 in the north end of the Espanola city limits.

State police said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The driver of the SUV was also injured in the crash, his condition is unknown at this time.
