A Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputy is out of the hospital and a woman is behind bars after she fled an officer only to crash into another deputy in Espanola on Saturday night.
New Mexico State Police said Melissa Valdez fled one deputy at a traffic stop after 8 p.m. outside the Espanola city limits.
The deputy did not chase Valdez, instead she ran her vehicle into the back end of another sheriff squad car driven by Rio Arriba deputy Peter Chavez.
Chavez was transported to the hospital with severe whiplash. He was later released.
Valdez reportedly drank a half pint of liquor before the initial traffic stop, state police said.
Three other adults and an 8-year-old child were also in her car at the time of the crash.
She was charged with DWI, child abuse and aggravated fleeing from an officer.
