What started out as a quick trip to get some burgers for his family turned into a rescue mission for an Albuquerque father.
Phillip Roybal still can’t believe what he saw at the scene.
Roybal says he saw the car pass him moments before the crash.
He estimates it was going about a hundred miles an hour.
He says the car went airborne before crashing into some trees.
Without thinking of their own safety, Roybal and other bystanders rushed to the car to help.
Together they pulled out a baby girl who was still in her car seat.
“Somehow we were able to get her out,” said Roybal. “There was a big enough hole to get her out. We got her out, the guy took her, they wrapped her in a blanket, and somebody else put the car out, because it was on fire. It was just the most horrible thing I've ever seen in my life.”
As for the 21-year-old driver police say was trying to race another vehicle, Roybal has this to say:
"I don't know what was going through his head but I have three daughters of my own and I would never put my daughter’s life in danger like that. I don't know what kind of person he is or who he is or anything but it was definitely a bone-headed thing to do"
Roybal doesn’t consider himself a hero, just someone in the right place at the right time.
He hopes someone would do the same for him.
